Art. Paint. Journal. Play.... Updates!

Please note, affiliate links are used throughout this post. Thanks for your support!

We are enjoying spring break around here, which also means we are enjoying lots of studio time. YAY! What does that mean for you? Well, I have LOADS of videos to share today...

First up...
Playing around with faces, flowers, colored pencils, watercolors, and more!

See if you can spot where I plopped my brush into my candle instead of my water! Oh... and that poor elephant didn't stand a chance....

Next...

I have been wanting to try PanPastels for a long time. Honestly, the cost was deterring me. But, my friends at Ellen Hutson sell them in small sets and individually! YAY!

See here: (and also on my supply page)
http://www.ellenhutson.com/#_a_120

So, I was super excited to try them! I must confess, I really didn't know a ton about these and had only watched one or two videos about various techniques. I figured the best way to learn was to just play!

What's the verdict? I LOVE them! Why? Well, I have always enjoyed a really soft look in my art and these lend themselves perfectly for that.

What did I learn?
- I REALLY like the way watercolor layers over them. Most specifically, if there is ONLY pan pastel down, then the watercolor on top. Also, the pastel colors that I chose blend together beautifully... the pink and yellow making a wonderful flesh tone.
- I would love to get some darker colors to try blending with more of a contrast.
- PanPastels layered OVER watercolor can produce a muddy look if not careful. I much preferred layering watercolor over the pastels.
- I really enjoyed applying the pastels through a stencil. The soft look, combined with the hard line of the shape is lovely!

And Finally....

I recently shared a bit of handmade journal making I was doing in an effort to use up some paper and such hanging around in my studio. See video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10koI1IKSec

Well, let's just say that this sparked lots of mojo and I couldn't seem to stop making little (and big) books!

Plus, I am having so much fun playing with the beautiful 28 Lilac Lane Embellishment Collection from May Flaum! And, as you can see in this video, they work really well for a cover!

You can find the entire line of 28 Lilac Lane at Ellen Hutson: http://www.ellenhutson.com/#_a_120

SO that's what I've been up to! I'll have more to share soon!

February Family Portraits...

Hello there! Welcome to this month's Family Portraits post!

Here are my spreads from February...

And with that, I have a bit of an announcement... Family Portraits has decided to discontinue all English operations. And, more specifically, they are going to concentrate their market solely in Poland. I think this is wonderful for their growing Polish market! How exciting for those scrappers to be getting products in their language! I have enjoyed working with these goodies and wish them all the best.

Ah - but don't worry! I will continue to scrap in this way, with one pocket spread per month. I am really loving the monthly overview and the ease of including ephemera!

Stay tuned...

Handmade with 28 Lilac Lane!

Hello there! I am thrilled to be working with May Flaum and Buttons Galore with her new line of embellishments! 28 Lilac Lane is beyond gorgeous!

Believe me when I say that I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY when I saw all of these in person! Not only are the buttons just beyond gorgeous in every way, but they are packaged so beautifully. The kits come in a reusable acrylic box and the bottles would make the most adorable little vases, when you have put all the buttons to use. Oh, and the tins! The tins! Such cuteness.

May really thought of every.single.little.detail when designing this line and I couldn't be more excited to be working with them!

Once I tore into each package, I set about making a page...

I combined a piece of handmade paper from an art supply store along with the gorgeous buttons, beads, sequins and charms, to tell the story of a recent thrift store find, turned hand made chair.

All the gorgeous bits are adhered with PPA (perfect paper adhesive). This is the adhesive May recommends and it is perfect for this!

A little white paint and some watercolors finished it off.

I can't stop playing with the beautiful goodies from 28 Lilac Lane and will have lots more to share soon!

The complete line is available at Ellen Hutson... See below (affiliate links):

Art. Paint. Journal. Play... Tweaking the Spreads...

Good morning and happy Monday to you! As I get more and more comfortable with what I like and don't like in my art journal, I am finding myself not too pleased with some previous spreads.

Time to change that!

First, let me just say that if these spreads had been done a year or so ago, or even more... I would most likely not be messing with them. However, they were done recently enough and my style has become more clear to me that I feel the need to tweak...

So, let's tweak!

And here are the newly finished pages...

Thanks for joining me today! If you have any questions about supplies used, please visit my supply page

See you soon!

A Little Weekend Housekeeping...

Hello lovely readers and happy Saturday!

A couple of new things to make you aware of...

First off, and by popular request, I now have a FAQ and Supply List page on the blog. Huzzah! you can find the button on the right sidebar. If you are reading this on a mobile device, you will need to enable the full web version to see the button. Or, you could click the link above and bookmark it :)

Another thing to mention is that in order to support my creative endeavors and all that I do on the inter webs, I have been trying to develop my affiliate program

By shopping through my links, both in my posts and on my supply page, you truly are supporting my creative endeavors. And did you know, that even if you don't buy the exact product I have linked, if you click on my affiliate link before you go shopping, I will still get paid by the merchant for my advertising efforts? Pretty cool, huh?!?

I enjoy supporting my favorite crafters this way and I thank you in advance for supporting me too!!!

Also, I have been posting to YouTube more actively, sometimes my content is there before it is here. Rest assured, it will always be here at some point, but... if you want to see it ASAP, be sure to subscribe to me on YouTube.

And, case-in-point... here is a video that was done a while ago and hasn't yet been posted:

And lastly, I have heard some rumors about Instagram changing it's display format so it will no longer be chronological. People are all up in arms, but really.... with things like this I tend to think it's better to wait to see the reality of the situation before getting in a tizzy.

Nonetheless, I am told that if you want to be sure not to miss a favorite post, you need to turn on post notifications of your favorite "grammer." So, if I meet that description to you, please head on over to my feed and turn on notifications for my posts. You can do that by clicking the three gray dots at the top right of any of my posts.

Also, did you know that you can view someone's feed on instagram even if you don't have an account? I know many of my readers don't have instagram. But, if you want to see what I am posting, you can just go to this link: instagram.com/soaphousemama - YAY!

That's enough housekeeping for now! If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Also, if you are a regular reader, but have never commented... I would love to know you are here! (As with most bloggers these days, I have way more readers than commenters and I would love to connect with you!) Don't hesitate to say "hi" below!!! Or, if that's not your style, send me an email: soaphouse@gmail.com - I hope to hear from you!

Have a great weekend!

A "Clean Up the Desk" Card...

It happens to all of us... cleaning up the desk and discovering little bits of goodness. Well, this time, I threw them on to a card...

And just like that, a card!
I love it when stuff comes together like that!

Art. Paint. Journal. Play... It's in the Eyes...

Hello there!

Before we get to this week's art journal spread, I just want to show you a video I had on the Cocoa Daisy Blog the other day...
Take a look...
Okie dokie! Now, on to this week's spread...

For this one, I am painting and doodling a spread that I had previously drawn, while playing with some new supplies...

Most notably some oil pastels, gelatos, and Faber Castell Crayons (supply list below)...

Have a look!

I have to say, I love all these new goodies and am having tons of fun incorporating a variety of supplies and mediums! Something worth mentioning... the Faber Castell Crayons are NOT water soluble. This is actually really cool once you realize it and can create some lovely effects!

(please note... these are my most used supplies. They may or may not have been put to use on this exact page)
