Tone on Tone with Winter...

Hello, hello! I have a little inspiration to share with you all today, along with some of the other DT members from the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog. We don't have a challenge this week due to the holiday season, but you won't get rid of us that easily! So, instead of a specific challenge, we are bringing you some wintery inspiration...

I live in the south and we very rarely get snow. But, when it does happen... we sure do notice! In fact, the entire city pretty much closes down and people are practically standing in line to by a cow for fear they will never have access to milk again.

What I love most about snow, when we do get to see it, is the soft tone-on-tone affect it has on the landscape. Although this layout isn't about snow, I wanted to create that look and feel on my layout.... so let's see how we can achieve that, shall we?

One of my favorite ways to build layers of tone on tone goodness, is through collage. The forgiveness of layering and white paint really does come in handy!

First up, I have layered some grays, whites, and mint greens...
Then, I just adhere them to my background using Stickles. I chose Stickles for 2 reasons... for one, I am out of Matte Medium. The other reason is that I am counting on the sparkle and texture to help along the snowy look of my page...
Once that is good and dry, I simply apply some white paint for a bit of a white-washed effect...
I love the softness of that! Now for some Gelatos...
A simple scribble here and there, then a dab of a wet brush...
Very pretty! Then, a bit more white paint is applied and now for some more glitter...
With the glitter set into the paint and all of that other mixed media fun, I can start building the rest of the page, starting with the photo...
A wood veneer card finds it's way on the page and now for a few punched snowflake shapes...
A couple of clouds don't hurt either...
I just love the subtle dimension that a tone-on-tone look can create...
And there we have it! A page full of glittery, snowy, wintery goodness...
From wintery thoughts, to a finished page!

I hope this has inspired you to try some collage work in your next project!

See you soon...

  3. Very pretty! I love all the soft wintery colors and the touches of glitter. I swear we need to be able to buy bigger jugs of multi-medium! I'm thinking at least a quart size, lol!

  4. Hi Ashli, I have been following for a few months now and have hardly commented. I apologise and I am rectifying that now. What a gorgeous page and so I have pinned it and will give it a try as soon as I can :-).

  5. Beautiful layout Ashli! Love the shimmery goodness and the pretty color palette! Hope you had a very Merry Christmas!

  6. Gorgeous soft teals and blues! reminds me of the soft hues from the snow! Lovely layout!

  7. Ashli...your layout is so pretty. I love the wintery setting with the snowflake background and the wintery white and frosty colors. Love the sweet picture in the center and how you've surrounded it with all of the little white embellishments. The touches of glitter really add that frosty look! <3 Candy

  8. Snow has the same effect in Nashville - when I was living there anyway - the city shuts down at even the mention of snow. And don't dare stop by Publix on the way home if it's snowing because the store is mobbed and there is no bread, no milk, no peanut butter, etc... I guess it's just survival instinct. LOL. Love your page with that pretty grey snowflake background. And the subtle color of the gelatos is perfect. :)

  9. Gorgeous Ashli! Love the photo and all the snowy and textured elements on your layout. Great layers as always! I hope you had a lovely Christmas!!

  10. Such a pretty page Ashli! I love the tone on tone look you created to go with your great photo!

  11. This is STUNNING! Girl, you surely do know how to rock the gelatos! And this whole color palette is a favorite of mine. Your write-up, as usual, had me smiling, too, and I laughed at people waiting in line to buy cows for fear of never having milk again! Here where I live, we've got at least two feet of the white stuff (snow, not milk) piled everywhere, so I guess we all have various snow feelings! Mine is, "less please!" Anyway, really beautiful project!

  12. what a gorgeous layout! ILove your way of layering! Fantastic as always! BArbarayaya

  13. Such a wonderful layout, Ashli. Love the beautiful soft color scheme and layers. :)

  14. You always remind me to get out some materials I haven't used in awhile - thanks!
